<p>There are generally 3 disciplines: aerobic, resistance training, and stretching. A solid cross training regimen includes all three to some degree.</p>
<p>Let me give you an example, a single cross training workout might be include:</p>
<p>Workout: 25 minutes running, 15 minutes weight lifting, and 15 minutes stretching.</p>
<p>Or, it might be over the course of several workouts and be scheduled as follows:</p>
<p>Day 1: 45 minute run.</p>
<p>Day 2: 30 minutes of weight lifting and 30 minutes of core work.</p>
<p>Day 3: 35 minutes using an exercise bike and 25 minutes stretching.</p>
<p>Day 4: 35 minutes using a rower concluding with 30 minutes stretching.</p>
<p>4 Benefits of Cross Training</p>
<p>1. Get some variety in your workouts. Doing the same workout over and over gets stale.</p>
<p>2. Getting in peak shape and being a peak performer is more likely if you do cross training so you condition your entire body &#8211; all muscles and systems. Cross training does this.</p>
<p>3. Let your body recover. If you do a one hour weight lifting workout of your upper body, you certainly don&#8217;t want to do another hour of weight training on your upper body the next day. But, you can do a nice 40 minute elliptical training session or 45 minute stationary bike ride.</p>
<p>4. The complementary skills you get from the different disciplines can help improve your performance and conditioning in your primary workout discipline. If you&#8217;re a swimmer, resistance training and stretching can help your swimming performance.</p>
<p>Get creative with cross training. You can mix up a particular discipline as well. For example, if you&#8217;re a swimmer, you can do long distance swimming one day and then do sprints another day.</p>

<p>You&#8217;ll know exactly what I&#8217;m talking about once you have performed a set of squats to failure.</p>

<p>What can&#8217;t be overlooked is the potential of the squat as THE most effective exercise for muscle building that will help to induce rapid growth.</p>
<p>Due to their high level of difficulty, they force your body to release higher amounts of important anabolic hormones like testosterone and growth hormone, packing on more size and strength to your lower body than any other exercise for muscle building.</p>

<p>Too many times I&#8217;ve heard people say &#8220;It&#8217;s too hard on my knees&#8221; or &#8220;Squats stunt your growth, don&#8217;t they?&#8221;.</p>
<p>What is my answer to them?</p>
<p>Rubbish!</p>
<p>Exercise for muscle building is an absolute must if you&#8217;re in the gym with the goal of maximizing your total body muscle gains.</p>
<p>Proper Squatting Technique</p>
<p>For safety purposes, you should only perform your squats in a power rack or cage.</p>
<p>That way, it&#8217;s your prerogative to adjust the height at which you clear the bar, and you can always drop the bar on the safety pins if your muscles give way.</p>
<p>Set the safety pins right below the depth that you are squatting and the J Hooks around the level of your nipples.</p>
<p>While you perform a squat, your chest should be raised, your head should be pulled back, and there should be a slight arch in the lower part of your back.</p>
<p>When performing squats, keep your gaze straight ahead and never look up or down; plus, at no time should you be leaning too far forward.</p>
<p>At the bar, position your hands at about the same width as a bench press.</p>
<p>Before you start clearing the bar, you need to have it positioned evenly along your traps.</p>
<p>When you place the bar, it needs to rest across the lower portion of your traps and your rear delts.</p>
<p>The bar should feel like it&#8217;s going to slide off.</p>
<p>After clearing the bar take only as many steps back as you have to.</p>
<p>Believe it or not, most squat injuries occur when backing up, so make sure that you only back up as far as is necessary.</p>
<p>Get your feet shoulder width apart and point them at a 45-degree angle.</p>
<p>Inhale deeply and lower your body.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s almost as though there is a chair behind you that you&#8217;re moving to sit in.</p>
<p>Your knees should never bow in, so at all times make sure they are in line with your feet.</p>
<p>During the squat, lower your body until your thighs are at least parallel to the ground.</p>
<p>Upon reaching the bottom position, you should begin to rise again.</p>
<p>You should not relax down there!</p>
<p>Use your legs and back to return to the upright position as quickly as possible.</p>
<p>When you reach the upright position, take another deep breath and continue the exercise until you complete the required number of reps.</p>
<p>Closing Thoughts.</p>
<p>Get into the squat rack-it&#8217;s the best thing you can do for your body.</p>
<p>You&#8217;ll be shocked at the resulting muscle gains if you treat this lift with respect.</p>
<p>Do squats once a week, in 2 sets of 5 to 7 reps.</p>

<p>There&#8217;s no magic formula to getting ripped. To be honest it takes a lot of hard work and most people are bound to fail. But if you really stick with it and follow the fundamentals you will succeed. I guarantee it.</p>
